Core Exercises for Adults Over 60

Your core is the set of muscles around your middle that helps you stay upright and move with control. It supports your posture, helps you get out of a chair, makes walking steadier, and lets you carry things with less strain. A stronger core helps everyday movement feel more supported.

Stand and sit taller

Core strength helps you sit and stand upright instead of slouching forward.

Move with control

A steady core helps you walk, turn, reach, and carry things with less wobble.

Support everyday tasks

Getting out of a chair, getting dressed, and moving around the home all call on your core.

How to start

How to Start

Core training does not require crunches or floor work. Gentle seated movements are a fine place to begin. The seated spinal twist, for example, gets your middle moving while you stay comfortably seated.

Start with one movement, a few repetitions at a time, two or three days per week. Move slowly and breathe steadily. As it feels easier, add a few more repetitions before adding new exercises.

Safety note: Core work should feel like gentle effort, not pain. Move within a comfortable range and avoid holding your breath. If you have ongoing back pain, a recent surgery, or another concern that may affect exercise, talk with an appropriate healthcare or rehabilitation professional before progressing.
